“Living It Out”
John 17:20-26
Speaker: Pastor Michael Šust
1)
I am prayed for…(John 17:20)
Read (Luke 3:21, Luke 9:28-35,
John 11:41+42) What happens when Jesus prays? What should you expect to happen
when you pray? When has waiting for a “voice from heaven“ hampered your
spiritual life? Share a time in your
life when you could say “Father, I thank you that you have heard me”. Jesus’
intercession for us is not begging God to do something contrary to His will but
rather a conversation between the Godhead confirming what they have desired
from before the creation of the world.
2)
I am predestined …(John 17:21-22)
God’s desire was to choose to
save a people who would be the exhibit of His son’s glory for all eternity. (Read
Eph. 1:3-11) God is not forced to act by anything external to Himself. He works
ALL things according to the council of His will. The council of His will is
what the Father, Son and Spirit in perfect oneness determined to do before time
began. Awesome, how do you know God’s will? What do you do to keep your
behavior consistent with God’s will? In verse 21 what does our oneness demonstrate?
What does your behavior toward other believers demonstrate? What is the source
of our oneness? What might be true if we have no desire for oneness?
3)
I am loved…(John17: 23)
In verse 23 what will our oneness
demonstrate to the world? What does it mean for the Father to love us just like
He loved the son? Identify a time in
your life when someone continued to love you when you didn’t deserve it. What
would our church be like if you consistently chose to love people who don’t
deserve it? What would your life be like if you loved Jesus enough to love the
people He loves? What’s stopping you?
4)
I am invited…(John 17:24-25)
Where is Jesus going? (See John
17:5) What similarities do you see between verses 5 and 24? What will we
experience in His presence? Jesus isn’t satisfied with just having his glory
restored but desires to have us share in that glory. In your life what are you
doing to glorify Jesus? How many more opportunities to glorify God are we
promised?
5)
I am called…(John17: 26)
How is Jesus continuing to make
the Father’s name known? In verse 26 what is the end result? How is Jesus accomplishing
this through us? It is important to remember those God has called must respond.
They can’t respond until we share a gospel that demands a response. As you
share your faith what essentials must you include to insure the gospel you
share is indeed the Gospel of Jesus?

“Sorrow and Triumph”
John 16:16-33
Speaker: Pastor Michael Šust
1)
When I don’t get it He understands (John 16:16-19)
a)
V.16
‘A little while ‘ refers to a micro amount of time. Jesus in essence says ‘I am going to
accomplish these things right now, so anticipate them. What discourages you
from anticipating God working right now in: your life; your family; our church?
Identify a time in your life when focusing on the future led you to ignore what
God was doing in the present?
b)
V.17
The disciples don’t get the ‘ little while’ of v. 16. What didn’t they get in
Matt. 16:5-12? Why did Jesus pick these imperceptive men to carry out His work?
What area of weakness leads you to question your usefulness to God’s work? What
is Paul’s comment in 2 Cor. 12:9+10? What action do you need to take to live up
to your significance in: God’s work; our church; your small group?
2)
When I don’t like it He encourages (John 16:20-22)
a)
V.
20 Jesus answers the confusion of previous verses with an emphatic declaration
that we will have sorrow in this world. Since Jesus is so clear on this
teaching why do so many Christians doubt, despair and sometimes desert when
sorrows come along?
b)
V.21+22
What is the cause of the joy in verse 22? Is this joy dependent on external
conditions? What is the duration of this joy? If no one can take our joy why do
we so often choose to lose it?
3)
When I don’t have it He provides (John
16:23-28)
a)
V.23
+24 These truths are based in the joyous relationship of verse 22. Those who live in that relationship desire
God’s will and ask accordingly. In your life where have you asked for something
out of selfish desires? What was the result?
b)
V.
25-28 God desires for us to understand plainly what His word says and thereby
know His will. Where does the Spirit of Christ tell us plainly about the
Father? Who does the Father love in verse 27? Why does He love them?
4)
When I don’t believe it He perseveres (John 16:29-33)
a)
V.
29+32 Jesus having heard the confidence of the disciples asks if they really
believe now. Why do you believe Jesus is who He claims to be? Would suffering
like the disciples endured shake your faith?
b)
V.33
What will we have in this life? Who has
overcome the world? So, what was your problem?

“His”
John 16:4b-15
Speaker: Pastor Michael Šust
1) His Loss is my gain…(John 16:4b-7)
a)
(Verse
4) Jesus spares the disciples much worry by concealing the events of the future
until this time. Where in your life has
God spared you from worry by keeping the events of the future secret?
b)
(Verses5+6
John 13:36,37+14:5) How did the disciples go from being excited about going
with Jesus to sorrowful in such a short time? Sorrow in this passage denotes a
heaviness of heart. In essence the disciples get “bummed out “ by what Jesus
has just told them. When the sorrow, heaviness and worry of this world shift
your focus away from following God to whom do you turn for help?
c)
(Verse
7) In His physical body how many places could Christ be at the same time?
How many disciples did Jesus have? If they were all
in separate places how many could he be with at one time? (Read John 14:16+17)
In whom does the Spirit of truth dwell? How long will he be with us? Explain
the advantage Jesus speaks about in John16:7 and what that means for you
personally.
2) His work is
my redemption…(John16: 8-11)
In
verse 8 Jesus introduces the Spirit as the active agent of salvation in this
age. No one will ever be saved apart
from the work of the Spirit of God. Identifying specific times the Spirit
worked in your life can help you overcome doubt or lack of confidence in your
testimony.
a)
(Verse
9) Share your experience of the Spirit convicting you of your sinfulness and
giving to you the knowledge of eternal life.
b)
(Verse
10) Share an example of the Spirit convicting you of an area of unrighteousness
in your life and the steps you took to correct that behavior.
c)
(Verse
11) How are you led by the Spirit to make good judgments regarding
appropriateness or priorities in activities?
3) His word is my direction…(John16:
12-15)
a)
(Verse12)
Jesus tells the disciples he has more to say but they can’t bear it. With what doctrine
or truth about God that today you understand (OK, sometimes we don’t understand
all of it.) and believe did you initially struggle or reject?
b)
(Verse13)
In verse 13 Jesus calls the Spirit the Helper and the Spirit of Truth what
other names are used in Romans 8: 9? In John 14:16 the word ‘another’ means
another of the same kind. Jesus is saying that the Spirit is as much God as He
is God. The disciples received the word of God as the spirit spoke to them in
the first century. How do we still hear the Spirit’s words?
c)
(Verse
14) What is the work of the Spirit in verse14? What is the end result?
d)
(Verse15)
In these two final verses we see the cooperation within God’s plan for
redemption. The Spirit takes all the truth of God and declares it to us. We in
turn declare God’s word to the world. The Spirit takes the word we share,
applies it to men’s hearts and they are saved. How are you cooperating with His
plan?

“Abiding”
John
15:1-11
Speaker:
Pastor Michael Šust
The strength of my
connection…(John 15:1-5)
a) In John 15: 1, what kind of vine is Jesus called? Many religions
and philosophical systems hold that Jesus was a good man, maybe even
a prophet. Share what scripture you would use to demonstrate that
Jesus is the only means of salvation?
b) In verse two the Father cuts off the branches which don’t bear
fruit. (Read Matt. 7:13-23) Note the words few and many. Since so
many are lost, what evidence in your life causes you to believe you
are saved? (Read John 10: 27-29) If you are truly saved what would
cause you to doubt your salvation?
c) Pruning is the act whereby God inflicts distress to improve our
connection to Christ. In your life where do you see the pruning
action of God? According to Heb12:8&9 what is the condition of
those who don’t experience pruning? (Read James1:2-4) How have the
trials in your life made you more consistent in your spiritual life?
The level of my consistency…(John 15:6-8)
a) When Jesus repeats himself it is always to emphasize an essential
truth. What happens to the branches in verse 6? If salvation is
permanent why are these branches burned? (Read 1John 2:19) Scripture
clearly teaches that truly saved people are…truly saved, and can
never lose their salvation. Does the guilt of your past make it
difficult for you to rest in God’s forgiveness? (Read Psalm 103
:12) To God, how far away is our past?
b) (John 15:6-7) The word abide in these verses communicates the
idea of continuous residence. Retirees often have houses in some
distant state yet for most of the year live elsewhere. Share from
your own life the thoughts or activities that move you away from your
home with God? God uses (what we call The Pillars at Harvest)
worship, prayer, the Word and witness to keep us close to Him. How
consistent are you in each of these areas? What steps can your
accountability partners take to help you in these areas?
c) Jesus tells us in verse 8 that God the Father is glorified when
we prove we are Christ’s disciples. What habits have you cultivated
to keep your witness consistent and credible? What habits compromise
your witness? Are there enough inconsistencies in your life to
disprove your discipleship?
The joy of my compliance… (John 15:9-11)
-
Jesus loves us as much as the
Father loves Him. (Read Ephesians1:18-23) Describe the extent and
duration of the Fathers love? God makes a covenant with us and
simply asks us to live in His love. Why is that such a difficult
task?
-
What action in verse 10 will keep
us abiding in His love? (Read Philippians2:12) Explain the
difference between keeping God’s commandments as a means of
salvation and keeping His commandments as a product of salvation.
-
Christ’s summary desire is that
we would have His joy. Joy is the product of a relationship that is
rooted in God’s love. Last week Gordon referred to “radical”
Christianity. The word radical is from the Latin word for root. We
will never be radical until we pull up our roots in this world and
put down roots in the Kingdom of God. In your life what action do
you need to take this week to grow deeper in your relationship with
Christ?

“Till Death Do Us Part, We Are Inseparable”
1 Corinthians 7:10-15, 32-39
Speaker: Pastor Michael Šust
My spouse and I are inseparable…
(1 Corinthians 7:10-15)
-
In verse 10 Paul tells the reader
that the command not to divorce is not new but simply a restatement
of Christ’s command (Matt 5:31&32). In verse 12 he gives a
further command concerning divorce, according to 2Tim3:16 which of
these commands have more authority? Do you ever find yourself
ranking the authority of scripture passages (for example: Old and
New Testaments, words of Christ in red…)? Has this ever led you to
reason away your non-compliance with a Biblical command?
-
As you read 1Cor. 7:10-15
underline the words feel or feeling. Is there evidence in the text
presenting the option of only carrying out these commands if we feel
good about the outcome? In your life to what extent do you let your
feelings determine your behavior? If your emotions present a
constant struggle for you, have you been willing to share this
during small group accountability time?
-
In Malachi 2:13-16 why does God
express his anger with the husband? In what ways other than adultery
can husbands and wives be faithless? What activities separate you
from your spouse’s companionship? How as a single person could
your friendship with a married person cheat a spouse from
companionship that is rightfully theirs? Christ was willing to give
up everything to initiate the new covenant, what areas are difficult
for you to give up to maintain the covenant with your spouse?
-
Created as we were to image God
(Gen 1:26&27) have you ever considered how marriage images God?
As God exists as three in one, Father, Son and Spirit, unique but
inseparable, so in marriage the man and woman, unique individuals,
are inseparably connected. (“One flesh”) If marriage images
God’s very nature explain how this fits into His view of divorce?
Jesus and I are inseparable… (1
Corinthians 7:32-39)
a) Verse 32 presents Paul’s desire for the Christian to be free
from anxiety. From studying the text of verses 32-34 is this anxiety
a negative trait? What would be a working definition for this word?
Identify specific concerns that married individuals rightfully have
that wouldn’t be of concern to a single believer?
-
As verse 35 summarizes all of
verses 32-34 what goal should we press toward? Paul reminds us in
verse 31 that this world is passing away. In what areas does our
relationship to the world system impede our reaching that goal?
-
Given that the Holy Spirit
doesn’t seem to place a premium on either marriage or singleness,
but rather on devotion to God, how can we discourage idle gossip
concerning people’s marital status? Are you willing to take
accountability to the level where you confront unprofitable
conversation?

“The Joy
of Surrender”
1 Peter 3:1-7
Speaker: Pastor Michael Šust
Introduction
a) READ 1 Corinthians 11:3 - According to this verse
what is the biblical chain of command? Does this verse imply that Christ is
inferior to God?
b) READ
John 10:30 Genesis 2:24 and Galatians 3:28 - If God and Christ are equal yet
Christ submits to the Father’s will (“Not my will…” Luke 22: 42) what makes it
so hard for some to accept that a woman can be equal to a man yet submissive?
I really want to
rejoice in winning my husband… - READ 1 Peter 3:1-2
a)
What is more frustrating, men who don’t listen or women
who remind them they don’t listen?
b)
Clearly God isn’t frustrated but why would he be
grieved with both actions? As a submissive woman do you take comfort from the
fact that you aren’t responsible for the outcome when you follow your husband’s
leadership? How should that affect your behavior?
c)
Men, have you ever confronted the reality that God will
demand from you an answer for how you lead your family? If so how does that
affect your day-to-day behavior?
I really want to rejoice
in the beauty of my heart… - READ 1 Peter 3:3-4
a)
In the area of adornment what influences your decision
making process: Insecurity? Societal norms? …

READ 1 Corinthians 10:29b - Since a woman has Christian
liberty why should she change her style just because a man has a problem with
lust? Compare 1 Corinthians 10:31.
c)
V. 4 - What is the “imperishable beauty?” How is it
developed?
I really want to
rejoice in God’s sovereignty… - READ 1 Peter 3:5-6
a)
In verse 5 the word “hoped” conveys the thought of a confident
expectation. Do you ever lack confidence in God’s sovereignty? If you really believed
He was totally in control how would that change you?
b)
Although the words joy and happiness are often used
interchangeably, the classical use defines joy as a permanent possession and
happiness as temporary often related to luck.
Have you been guilty of trying to find happiness on your own rather than
expecting God to bring you His joy as a result of following His Word?
I really want to
rejoice in my husband’s understanding… - READ 1Peter 3:7
a)
Given that a submissive wife’s well being is wholly
dependent on her husband’s leadership. What character traits should an understanding
husband exhibit?
b)
From this verse what are the consequences of not being
an understanding husband?

a)
For what primary purpose did God created the first
human being (Heb: “a·?am”)
– v. 26?

God is the Potter and we are the clay (see Isaiah
64:8). The image of God was to be
projected through three basic functions.
Can you identify these in verses 28 and 29?
c)
Concerning “multiplication,” of mankind, discuss the
specifics of God’s original design for men and women and compare it to what you
see in the world around you.
d)
Concerning our “dominion” of the earth, where do you
see the application of what God meant - 1. In this passage, 2. In your daily
life?
e)

f)
Realizing that sin has now corrupted our accurate
projection of God’s image, how did God restore His image unto us? (Read Colossians
1:15-16)
g)
Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21. As the Scripture commands us to disregard the
“perspective of the flesh,” look now through the eyes of Christ at the three
functions of our design (multiplication, dominion and stewardship) and discuss
their new greater application in your daily life.
The Great

God said: “It is not good that the man (a·?am) should be alone.” What
significance do you find in this verse concerning God’s complete purpose for mankind?

counterpart. If married, how do you and
your spouse live out the “leader and helper” functions in your
relationship? Give specific examples.
d)
If single, how are you preparing now for upholding this
fundamental function in a future marriage relationship? (Share with your group.)
e)

being as male and female complementary counterparts.
h)
Back to the original purpose of God in multiplication,
dominion and stewardship – Read Ephesians 5:31-32 and discuss the application
of all of the above verses in terms of our functionality as the “Bride of
Christ.”

Why wasn’t Judas clean as the other disciples? (Look back at John 12:4-6)
e)
Read Matthew 6: 11-12.
Do you think there is a reason for the juxtaposition of “give us today
our daily bread” and “forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven…”
f)
Why is a repentant attitude necessary for serving
others (and God)? See Revelation 2:5
Extraordinary Love - READ John 13:12-20

In your own words (let everyone share), what does God’s
promise of a blessing in verse 17 mean to you personally? In context of this passage, how does it apply
to your day to day living?
b)
Your service to others, what is it really a reflection
of? - Read Luke 7:47 - What does the Scripture say about the awareness of His

“The Commitment”
John 12:1-11
Speaker: Pastor Michael Šust
At His Feet
–
READ John 12:1-3
a)
Verse 3 is obviously the loaded verse in this
passage. Discuss why Mary’s act of
worship caused indignation in her time and culture (cf. Matt. 26, Mark 14).
b)
What do you think: Would your public (biblical) worship
of Jesus cause indignation in a religiously inclined community because of its costliness, intimacy or genuineness?
J
c)
As a reflection of your commitment to Him, does your worship of God include giving a biblical portion of
your income in support of God’s work at Harvest? (10% is a good place to start
– see Hebrews 7:1-10, Malachi 3:8-12).
d)
In principle,
do you desire or fear this “Mary-kind-of-worship” in your walk with Jesus? Is there a good reason for not desiring this
kind of commitment and freedom? The
purpose of this study is to help people in their walk (not to judge them). Try to share with the group in your own words
what would help you to worship
God like this both in your personal and public lifestyle.
e)
In the last part of verse 3 that says, “The house was filled with the fragrance of
the perfume,” God shows us that passionate biblical worship touches every
bystander through its genuine
expression. How do you think your personal
expression would affect a friend or co-worker someone else invited to worship at Harvest? Would there be a question about its
genuineness - compared to the way they know you outside of church?
f)
What are you willing to adjust concerning your
commitment to Jesus, so that your public
worship lifestyle will become “an aroma that touches every bystander?” (Simple things count, like being on time on
Sunday morning, participating in prayer before worship, assuming a more
reverend body posture, forsaking a “status-quo-appearance”).
At His Disposal
–
READ John 12:4-8
a)
In verse 4 we learn that Judas, though he is described
as a “disciple,” was “about to betray” Jesus.
What character attributes do you see (v. 4-6) in his conduct that preceded his betrayal of
Christ? For additional information see
Matthew 26:8 and Mark 14:4-5.
b)
There are many ways we can betray Jesus rather than being at His disposal. Are you struggling with any such negative
attitudes that could be a sign of an upcoming betrayal (also known as “sin”)?
c)
In v. 8 Jesus warns about a danger of substituting business in ministry for closeness with God. Have you ever fallen in this spiritual
trap? Are you in it now?
At His Mercy
– READ
John 12:9-11
a)
Lazarus’ life was in danger (v. 10) because of his
closeness and friendship with Jesus.
Over all, how would you evaluate your commitment to Jesus?
b)
There is a direct relation between the totality of our
commitment to God and being an effective witness (v. 11). Based on this passage of scripture, what must
change first before God will increase your fruitfulness? Do you need to adjust? How can we help?

"The
Prophecy”
John
11:45-57
Speaker:
Pastor Michael Šust
The life of a professing Christian in
21st century United States of America is shaped by many
outside influences. Walking with Jesus in the power of the Holy
Spirit requires an attitude of obedience and dedication that will
keep a believer from slipping into a dull religious routine. This
lesson is designed to point out some of the differences between the
prophetic realm of a real faith and the programmatic routine of a
religious life.
The Fear of the Prophetic
– Read John 11:45-48
-
What is the one sure sign of God’s
work we can identify? (v. 45). Are you connected to a prophetic
environment where God is working?
-
What is the tendency of a
programmatic church concerning the Holy Spirit’s work? Share about
your experience with “wanting to be in control.”
-
Why do people (even believers)
fear the prophetic realm? Do you have any such fear that manifests
itself in ways similar to those of the Pharisees? (Examples:
controlling spirit, critical attitude, squelching the work of the
Holy Spirit, exalting men…).
The Voice of the Prophetic
– Read John 11:49-54
-
Based on Caiaphas’ reaction in
v. 48-49, what are some of the symptoms of the so called
programmatic approach (which is basically the flesh). What would
the prophetic approach look like (see Acts 5:38-39)? Are there any
fleshly symptoms in your walk?
-
Read Psalm 76:10 and share an
example from your life (if you have one) when you witness God using
the works of the enemy to His advantage.
-
Sometimes God gives the enemy an
allowance to work in order to accomplish His greater purpose. When
wronged by someone who works against God, what is the correct
approach on our part? (See Genesis 50:19-20).
-
Currently, is there a situation in
your life in which you feel like “Joseph in prison?” What do
you learn from v. 54?
The Participation in the
Prophetic – Read John 11:55-57
-
By application, we can see three
essential parts of a prophetic lifestyle:
-
Personal Purification (v.
55) – See Romans 12:1
Share about your
daily or weekly practice of keeping your ways pure before the Lord.
-
Eager Expectation (v. 56) –
See Hebrews 9:28
If Jesus Christ
came back tonight, would His return catch you by surprise? Do you
take any specific steps in your devotions to be reminded of His
imminent return?
-
Warfare Anticipation (v.
57) – See 1 Peter 5:8-9
Those who embrace
the prophetic lifestyle (as opposed to a mere religious routine) will
experience spiritual warfare. Discus the state of your personal
defenses (for a scriptural reference of these you may want to glance
at Ephesians 6:10-20).
